Brusasco, Vito, and Riccardo Pellegrino. Invited Review: Complexity of factors modulating airway narrowing in vivo: relevance to assessment of airway hyperresponsiveness. J Appl Physiol 95: 1305–1313, 2003;10.1152/japplphysiol.00001.2003.—In vivo, the airway response to constrictor stimuli is the net result of a complex array of factors, some facilitating and some opposing airway narrowing, which makes the interpretation of bronchial challenges far from being straightforward. This review begins with a short description of the complex mechanisms of airway smooth muscle activation and force generation as the starting events for airway narrowing. It then focuses on gain factors modulating airway smooth muscle shortening and on the geometric factors determining the magnitude of reduction in airway caliber in vivo. Finally, in light of the evidence that mechanical modulation of airway smooth muscle tone and airway narrowing is at least as important as the inflammatory contractile mediators in the pathogenesis of airway hyperresponsiveness, the implications for the interpretation of bronchial challenges in clinical settings are discussed.

McParland, Brent E., Peter T. Macklem, and Peter D. Paré. Invited Review: Airway wall remodeling: friend or foe? J Appl Physiol 95: 426–434, 2003;10.1152/japplphysiol.00159.2003.—Airway wall remodeling is well documented for asthmatic airways and is believed to result from chronic and/or short-term exposure to inflammatory stimuli. Airway wall remodeling can contribute to airway narrowing as we...
متن کاملTanshinone IIA attenuates ovalbumin-induced airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness in a murine model of asthma
Objective(s): Tanshinone IIA (T. IIA), one of the most pharmacologically active components extracted from Salviae miltiorrhiza, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant features. The aim of the present study is to investigate the benefit of T. IIA on asthma using a murine model of asthma induced by ovalbumin (OVA). Materials and Methods: Male BALB/c mice were used in the present study. The mice we...
متن کاملThe smooth muscle and airway hyperresponsiveness.
Airway hyperresponsiveness, excessive airway narrowing caused by stimuli that normally elicit limited or no response, is one of the cardinal features of asthma. The length-dependence of smooth muscle contractility has been recognized for decades, and it forms an essential foundation for many aspects of the physiological regulation of airway contractility in vivo. This review summarizes the stru...
متن کاملThe preventive effect of Brassica napus L. oil on pathophysiological changes of respiratory system in experimental asthmatic rat
Objective: Asthma is an airway complex disease defined by reversible airway narrowing and obstruction, chronic airway inflammation, airway hyperresponsiveness, and tissue remodeling. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Brassica napus L. (B. napus) on airway pathologic changes in a rat model of asthma. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four rats were divided into 4 groups: contr...
